When you eat probiotic foods matters as much as what you eat.

Here is why.

Your stomach acid does not distinguish between harmful bacteria and the beneficial strains you are trying to deliver to your colon. In a fasted state — first thing in the morning, for example — gastric pH sits at approximately 1.5 to 2.0. At that level, the majority of live bacteria simply do not survive the transit.

Eat oats and milk first. The fat, the bulk, and the time it takes to consume all of that raises gastric pH to somewhere around 4.0 to 5.0 and slows gastric emptying. Now add your yogurt.
